Dear Yuletide Author
Nov. 16th, 2009 09:27 pmI already told you a lot in the optional bits to my request, but just in case you're looking for more ...
Nero Wolfe: Things I love about this world - the banter between Wolfe and Archie, the fact that most of the time Rex Stout actually gives us enough clues to figure it out but somehow we usually don't, the period details, Archie eating at a diner or taking a girl dancing, Wolfe talking food, the world in which there are breakfast trays and served multi-course meals and doormen and maids, Saul Panzer's memory, Wolfe's irrationality with regard to women, the way Rex Stout weaves in details about contemporary books or sporting events or politics, Kramer chomping on his cigar, Archie & Lily and the fact that they are on equal footing which must have been unusual for their time.
Lord Peter: It's the characters I love here rather than the mysteries themselves. The short stories have a puzzle-like quality to them that I like, but in the novel length fiction it's spending time with the characters that I like. Peter's family is so odd - his sister and her communist boyfriend and the fact that she ends up marrying the very nice Parker, his brother and his affair and his staid and unimaginative life, his nephew who seems more like Peter than like either of his parents, his mother who is slightly unconventional. I also like the period details here - the clothing and the parties and the cars and wine and having a servant like Bunter. My very favorite of the Wimsey mysteries is Murder Must Advertise because it's humorous and because he seems to be having so much fun earning his living. And he's good at it.
Order of the Stick: I love the snark here and the role playing refs. But I already told you that. I like the guilty pleasure of enjoying Belkar's latest dig. I like Vaarsuvius doing something clever and wish s/he was appreciated more. I love the Monster in the Dark and how innocent he seems. I kind of like the Haley/Elan romance and I enjoy Elan's cluelessness. I like the gang's meta-comments on events that are clearly role playing cliches like ability checks and random encounters. I like how Red Cloak really kinda runs things for Team Villain.
