Dear Yuletide Author 2016
Oct. 9th, 2016 05:00 pmAO3 Name: Lorelei
Hello wonderful Yule Writer! I am so pleased that we share a fandom! The thing I love most about Yuletide stories is spending time in these worlds and with these characters and anything you write will have that. I truly buy into the idea that optional details are optional. But if you're looking for info on my tastes or for story ideas, you'll find them below.
General likes and dislikes
I read all of gen, het, slash, and femslash and any rating from G to M is fine by me.
Love:
humor, witty banter, wry commentary, farce, crackfic
drooling over a fine fictional meal
period details
romance, seduction, first times
happy endings
swashbuckling, capers, and our heroes kicking ass in their own particular ways
weird, wild, and over the top
five times fic
epistolary fic
lavish lifestyles
wining, dining, and dancing
adventure
Do Not Want:
major character death
rape
unresolved angst
love that is still unrequited at the end of the story
stories that depend on characters not communicating, unless done for humor
explicit horror, violence, or gore
Absolutely Fabulous
Characters requested: Edina Monsoon, Patsy Stone
Edina: “Right, time for another little drinky before we go.”
Saffy: “Where are you going?”
Edina: “New York.”
Saffy: “I didn't think they let people with drug convictions in.”
Edina: “Darling, it's not a conviction.”
Patsy: “Just a firm belief!”
I love Eddy & Patsy being outrageous and their insistence on living life on their own terms. I love their lavish lifestyles and their outlandish outfits. I love that they are there for each other through thick and thin. I love Eddy’s ridiculous obsessions and Patsy’s ability to reduce things to their core. I love the references to their even more outrageous pasts. I love their banter and snark. Anything fun and humorous would delight me! I just ask that Eddy & Patsy not get into any permanent trouble so the story can have a happy ending. I didn’t specifically request Saffy, Mother, or Bubble, but feel free to bring any of them into the story.
Want specific prompt ideas?
Eddy has read about the Danish concept of ‘hygge’. Sweetie-darling! Hygge is all the rage, and Eddy MUST HAVE IT. She is redecorating accordingly and has planned a special girls’ evening in for herself and Patsy. What does she have planned and how does it go hilariously wrong yet end up being a bonding experience for the two of them?
I hear that statement furs, gold metallic, and ruffles are among the hot fashion trends for Fall 2016. What combination of these is Eddy obsessed with? What bizarre scheme has she hatched to get her hands on the perfect outfit and what goes wrong with it? What does she end up having to wear to her big event after her scheme falls through?
Christmas in the Monsoon household! What could go wrong? Surely there is some kind of festive eggnog or punch? Has someone spiked the bowl? More than one person? And imagine what odd and outrageous gifts they might get each other! Has Eddy been decorating for this occasion? Will Patsy, in honor of the holiday or tempted by some unexpected tidbit, actually eat something for the first time since 1973? Is Eddy forced to invite Marshall & Bo or Justin & Oliver?
Eddy is feeling sentimental and arranges something special for Patsy’s birthday.
Patsy does a good deed, but only in an underhanded way where she can maintain plausible deniability and not be caught at it.
Eddy & Patsy as teenagers.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension (1984)
Characters requested: Buckaroo Banzai
“Remember, no matter where you go, there you are.” – Buckaroo Banzai
Cowboys, aliens, samurai, and scientists all in one place! I love that this canon is so weird, wild, and over the top that it’s practically crack!fic to start with. I love that Buckaroo and the crew are amazingly badass at so many different things. I love the little asides and references to intriguing untold stories. I love that there’s swagger and machismo and teasing as well as tenderness and care for each other. Anything that taps into the wild and wacky feel of canon will be perfect, but if you are the sort of writer who likes specific prompts, read on.
Tell me a story of adventure! Who has called on Buckaroo to save the world this time – the United Nations? the WHO? Band Aid? Hilary Clinton? What evil menace threatens humanity – more aliens? master criminals? climate change? an army of sentient mosquitos? What far out gadget has Buckaroo recently invented that is just the thing to solve this crisis?
New Jersey: “What’s that watermelon doing there?”
Reno: “I’ll tell you later.”
Do you remember the watermelon? Tell me a story about the watermelon! You can riff off of the ‘official’ explanation (found here: http://www.banzai-institute.com/0901FAQ.html ) or just ignore that and go wild, whichever you prefer.
Does Buckaroo hold a winter holiday party? What is it like?
Wanna write Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League?
Buckaroo’s diary.
Thin Man (Movies)
Characters requested: Nick Charles, Nora Charles
Reporter: ”Say listen, is he working on a case?”
Nora Charles: ”Yes, he is.”
Reporter: ”What case?”
Nora Charles: ”A case of scotch. Pitch in and help him.”
Nora Charles: ”How many drinks have you had?”
Nick Charles: ”This will make six martinis.”
Nora Charles: [to the waiter] ”All right. Will you bring me five more martinis, Leo? Line them up right here.”
I love the witty banter between these two. I love the juxtaposition between Nora’s high society upbringing and Nick’s gritty profession and acquaintances. I love how Nora loves Nick’s world and takes it all in stride, matching him drink for drink. I love the elegance of their lives. I love period details – ladies in evening gowns, men in suits and hats or in tuxes, doormen, butlers, breakfast trays, lavish multi-course dinners, speakeasies, jazz, martinis.
A quote from Wikipedia that captures some of what I like about The Thin Man: Ebert praises William Powell's performance in particular, stating that Powell "is to dialogue as Fred Astaire is to dance. His delivery is so droll and insinuating, so knowing and innocent at the same time, that it hardly matters what he's saying." I love that droll, insinuating, knowing and innocent combo. Any story that has Nora & Nick talking to each other will make me a happy camper.
Want specific prompts?
Casefic is good. Show me Nicky triumphing over evildoers while looking dashing and swigging martinis. Or is it Nora who does the triumphing this time?
Domesticity is also nice. Nick & Nora hold a dinner party and invite both his friends and hers?
Perhaps a fish out of water story? One of them has to go undercover in a role that is totally opposite of their usual style?
A New Year’s Eve with Nick & Nora as they wine, dine, and look back at a year’s worth of cases and anecdotes?
Nick & Nora take a cruise and encounter someone unexpected from her past or from his?
